Police training academy curriculum in general focuses only a small amount of time on one of the most important elements to the criminal investigation process is interview and interrogation.  The Rand Corporation (1979) identified that the two most important elements have the most direct impact on the positive solution of a criminal case was the collection and preservation of forensic evidence and the quality of the interviews conducted in connection with the case.  From a study that we have conducted and will be published in the near future, the average amount of time spent in the academy training officers in the skills necessary to conduct a thorough, productive, professional interview is an average of about 4 hours or about 5% of the full academy experience.

We and other law enforcement observers and researchers have found that a large portion of the material taught in our academies regarding interview, interrogation and deception is scientifically inaccurate (Vrij, 1998; Gudjonsson, 1992; Fisher, Geiselman, Davis, 1987).  In addition the greatest majority of those individuals who instruct those courses are relying on course materials and outlines prepared years earlier by someone else. The general population as well as judges, lawyers, police officers, teachers, corrections officers and federal agents fails to accurately spot deception 50% of the time. Only convicts do better. (Ekman, OSullivan, 1991).

PRACTICAL KINESIC INTERVIEW & INTERROGATION® is a multiphase behavioral analysis system used to conduct interviews and interrogations. This advanced technique utilizes all the aspects of human behaviors including speech, body language, statement analysis, and the assessment of personality type as documented by behavioral sciences research to produce more productive results from interviews and interrogations. Most importantly the course contents are based on and relies on in-depth scientific study and research as well as field application to insure accuracy, reliability, and usability.

These courses are designed for use in all areas of interview & interrogation including criminal investigation, intelligence, personnel, fire & arson, as well as retail and loss prevention and many more.
